Experience Highlights
1. Gartang Gali in Nelong Valley: A Forgotten Himalayan Passage

Gartang Gali is a historic wooden bridge built into a steep cliff in Uttarakhand’s Nelong Valley. Located within the Gangotri National Park, the 136-meter-long and 1.8-meter-wide pathway offers a thrilling skywalk experience along a sheer cliff face. At an altitude of 11000 ft above sea level, the wooden structure hangs dramatically on the cliffs above the Jadh Ganga valley. A short trek to this pathway is one of the memorable experiences in this Uttarakhand Tour.
Gangotri National Park has two major river valley systems, the Bhagirathi valley and the Jadh Ganga valley, both named after the rivers. The Jadh Ganga valley, also referred to as the Nelong Valley region (after one of the remote villages in the area), represents a classic trans-Himalayan landscape. With icy-blue waters and barren slopes above the tree line, Nelong Valley resembles a cold desert with sparse scrub vegetation. It features a well-maintained road network, developed primarily for strategic and border infrastructure purposes. With its stark terrain, Nelong Valley is often called the ‘Ladakh of Uttarakhand’ for its resemblance to Tibet and Ladakh-like settings and landscapes like Lahaul and Spiti – making it a uniquely attractive destination in the state.
Before the 1962 Indo-China war, Gartang Gali served as a vital Indo-Tibetan trade route, connecting the local villages of Uttarakhand with the Tibetan side. Local Jadh Bhotiya traders transported goods like salt and wool on yaks across this high-altitude trail. After the war, the bridge and Nelong Valley area was closed off and Gartang gali fell into disuse for many decades, until recently restored and reopened in 2021. As part of a push for Border Tourism in the Himalayas, Nelong Valley was gradually opened to visitors, offering a rare glimpse into a once-restricted frontier region.
The origins of Gartang Gali are debated – some believe it was built by locals with the help of Pathans from Peshawar for Indo-Tibetan trade, while another theory credits the Pathans but under the instruction of the retired British Army soldier, Frederick Wilson. Also known as ‘Pahadi Wilson’ and ‘Raja of Harsil’, Frederick Wilson had settled in Harsil Valley in the 1850s and is said to have carved the Gartang route to access the forbidden erstwhile Tibetan Kingdom. Regardless of its origins, the finished pathway once stood as a remarkable feat of high-altitude engineering and trade history.
Today, Gartang Gali is accessed via a short, scenic 2 km trek into the Jadh Ganga valley that begins near Bhairav Ghati, just a few kms before Gangotri. One of the important highlights of this curated Uttarakhand Tour, the Gartang Gali trek weaves through rocky cliffs, dense greenery, and a roaring river gorge. Visitors get to experience a distinctive blend of natural beauty, adventure, and the historical legacy of a once-vital trans-Himalayan passage. The region however is still off-limits for overnight stays due to its proximity to the Indo-Tibet border, preserving both its ecological and strategic sensitivity.
2. Offbeat Uttarakhand Villages: Riverbanks to Ridgelines
On this curated Uttarakhand tour, a few days are thoughtfully dedicated to exploring remote Garhwali villages. Secluded away in the hills rising above the Assi Ganga valley, these quaint hamlets offer a window into traditional Garhwali life. Surrounded by forests of Deodar, Pine, Oak and Rhododendrons, they sit on sloped highlands in the lap of nature.
With their age-old customs, terraced fields, wooden homes, and the warm hospitality of the mountain folk, these lesser-known villages in the Assi Ganga valley offer a sense of calm and stillness rarely found in cities. We stay in cozy homestays hosted by warm, welcoming families in these places. Travellers gain an intimate and authentic glimpse into the culture and rhythms of everyday mountain life.
A typical day on this experiential tour would begin with waking up to birdcalls, followed by a hearty local breakfast before setting out on guided walks through peaceful woodlands and rural trails. Days are unhurried and flexible, unfolding at a relaxed pace and free from the rush of typical ‘sightseeing’. We also indulge in ‘Forest Bathing’ – a mindful, immersive walk through the forest that engages all the senses, helping one reconnect with nature, reduce stress, and feel rejuvenated in the calm of the woods. From guided treks to viewpoints to unwinding with picnic lunches along the riverbed, there are many simple yet soulful highlights of this mindful journey. With options for gentle trails and relaxed experiences, these handpicked locales are suited for families, children and seniors. Far from the crowds, this immersive Uttarakhand experience provides a perfect pause to soak in the natural beauty and engage deeply with the local community.

3. Harsil Valley: Apples, Legends, and Life by the Bhagirathi

Harsil is a serene Himalayan village on the way to Gangotri, located on the banks of the Bhagirathi river at an altitude above 8000 ft. It lies about 75 km from the Uttarkashi town and can be reached by a scenic drive via NH-34, passing through captivating mountain roads along the Bhagirathi River. Framed by dense deodar and pine forests, apple orchards, and imposing snow-covered peaks, this idyllic settlement offers a peaceful escape from mainstream tourism with relatively lesser crowds.
The village lends its name to the broader Harsil Valley, which includes a cluster of scenic villages along the river. Collectively referred to as Harsil Valley, the villages of Harsil, Bagori, Mukhba, and Dharali together make up this tranquil haven. Rich in natural charm and cultural heritage, each village in the region offers a slice of mountain life perfect for travellers seeking authenticity in Uttarakhand. Between Gangotri and Harsil, Crystal-clear streams and cascading waterfalls merge with the Bhagirathi as it meanders through rich forests of blue pine and deodar. The valley is famed for its delicious apples, grown in abundance across its sprawling orchards. Harsil apples are quite popular and have earned a reputation for their natural sweetness. The area also produces high-quality red rajma (kidney beans), known for its rich taste, creamy texture and nutritional value. The region, with its secluded natural beauty and dramatic Himalayan backdrop, has also served as a favoured location for film shoots.
Given its proximity to the Indo-Tibetan border, Harsil holds strategic importance as a base for the Indian Army. Due to this proximity, some of the villages in the Harsil valley showcase strong Tibetan influence in architecture, rituals, and religious life. Bagori village near Harsil is known for its preserved wooden houses, heritage architecture, and as the resettled home of the Jadh Bhotiyas. The Jadh Bhotiyas, originally from Nelong Valley’s Nelang and Jadung villages, were resettled in Bagori after the 1962 Indo-China war. The Rongpa-speaking community now live along the Harsil Valley, practicing a blend of Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism. Bagori hosts a Buddhist temple and stupas alongside Hindu shrines – reflecting its strong Tibetan legacy and dual religious identity of its residents. Another village in the area, Mukhba or Mukhwa is known as the winter abode of Goddess Ganga. During the harsh winter months when heavy snowfall renders Gangotri Temple inaccessible, the idol of Maa Gangotri is ceremoniously brought down to the Mukhba village temple and worshipped here by the local priests. This tradition allows devotees to continue their prayers and rituals even when the temple in Gangotri is closed. This helps preserve the spiritual rhythm of the region through all seasons.
To summarize, exploring the Harsil valley is an exciting highlight of this curated Uttarakhand Tour. Wandering through these quiet villages and riverside trails, we experience local life, monasteries, temples, traditional architecture, and its stunning settings. Harsil valley is one of those rare gems in the ‘Land of Gods’ that invites you to slow down and truly connect with the soulful essence of Uttarakhand.
4. Explore Gangotri : Devotion in the Lap of Nature
Uttarakhand is known as Devbhoomi or the ‘Land of Gods’. The temple town of Gangotri is one of the defining spiritual landmarks that contribute to Uttarakhand being known as such. The deeply revered pilgrimage destination is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of approximately 3,100 m (10,170 ft) in the Garhwal Himalayas. Gangotri lies on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, around 98 km from the town of Uttarkashi and about 300 km from Dehradun, the state capital. It is one of the four famous ‘Char Dham’ pilgrimage sites of Uttarakhand.
On this curated Uttarakhand Tour, we visit Gangotri to experience a blend of deep spiritual significance and natural beauty. Here, visitors can witness the soulful Ganga Aarti at the white marble temple. The evening Aarti is a deeply spiritual experience set against the backdrop of sacred chants and flickering lamps. A short walk leads to Suryakund and Gaurikund, where the Bhagirathi river cascades through rock formations in dramatic waterfalls. Nearby, the Pandava Gufa, an ancient natural cave believed to be a meditation site of the Pandavas on their way to Kailash, offers a quiet spiritual stop. As a key point on this curated journey, Gangotri offers a powerful meeting of faith and nature. With myths and legends echoing through every corner, our guided walks uncover a profound spiritual experience amid awe-inspiring natural beauty.
According to Hindu legends, the Ganga—considered the most sacred of all Indian rivers descended to earth at Gangotri. When King Bhagirath performed severe penance to cleanse his ancestors’ sins, the river Ganga was allowed to descend from the heavens – but her force was so powerful it could have destroyed the earth. To soften her force, Lord Shiva caught her in his matted locks before releasing her gently, allowing the holy river to flow and purify all she touched. Built in the 18th century by the Gorkha commander Amar Singh Thapa, the Gangotri Temple marks this sacred spot which became a key pilgrimage site in the Char Dham circuit. Over time, a small town grew around the temple to serve the needs of pilgrims and local devotees – offering dharamshalas, lodges, shops, and basic amenities, all set against the backdrop of the majestic Himalayas.
The river’s true origin however is at Gaumukh at the base of the Gangotri Glacier. About 19 km from Gangotri, Gaumukh is accessible by a beautiful trek on an ancient route that travels deeper into the Gangotri National Park. Further ahead from gaumukh, the trail leads to the meadows of Tapovan, set beneath the towering presence of Mt. Shivling. From Gaumukh, the river begins its journey as the Bhagirathi. At Devprayag downstream, it meets the Alaknanda River, and from this confluence onward, the combined stream is officially known as the Ganga – India’s holiest river and a lifeline for millions across the plains.
